Graduate Assistantships
Robert H. Smith School Graduate Assistantship Hiring Process
The selection process for Smith School graduate assistantships is highly competitive. We have approximately 40 openly competitive positions available in the 2005-2006 academic year. We highly encourage that application packages be prepared with the utmost care.
Graduate Assistantship positions typically begin in August and run through the Academic Year, including December and January and may continue as late as May 31. All second-year MBA students in the full-time program are eligible to apply. Students who would like to be considered for a position must follow the procedures listed below. While there may be some graduate assistant positions available in the Smith School with their own funding and selection process, the following procedure is applicable to those administered by the Masters Program Office.

Smith School Graduate Assistantship applicants must submit the following for each:
- Cover letter for each position to which you apply, outlining your career objectives and interest in a specific position as well as a specific statement within the letter indicating that you will not hold additional employment while maintaining your GA appointment (August 2005-May 2006);
- Resume that outlines your education, work experience and involvement in extracurricular activities and community involvement activities;
- Unofficial Transcripts from the Smith School. Please click HERE to request official transcripts.
On top of all of a student’s application packets, each student should submit one Application Form (downloadable
Word Document).
Students are limited to selecting seven departments. All applicants not selected by any of their preferred departments will be circulated to areas where there are any remaining positions.
If a student requests to be considered for more than one department, he or she should submit one cover page and the proper number of application packets. For example, if a student applies to accounting, QUEST and DIT, the student should submit one application form and an application packet for each of the three departments. Any student failing to submit a package for each department will have his or her application forwarded only to his or her first choice department.
Materials can be mailed or dropped off at the front desk in the Masters Program Office.
Mail should be sent to:

All applications are due by close of business Thursday, April 14, 2005. No late applications will be accepted. Placement decisions will be announced the week of May 9th. All offers will be contingent upon review of academic record for minimum GPA requirement. All Smith School graduate assistants need to have a 3.25 cumulative grade point average by the end of Spring 2005 semester. Students not offered positions in May will have their applications retained so that they can be contacted should additional openings occur.
Students offered GA positions in the Smith School or outside the business school will receive a tuition credit. The tuition credit for a half-time GA position will be approximately $3,710 ($1,855 per semester). Graduate Assistants are classified as in-state for tuition purposes. Students who receive GA offers in late August or early September must be prepared to pay tuition on the deadline date because the tuition waiver takes approximately four weeks to process.
It is unfortunate that the MBA GA allocation is not large enough to support all students that express an interest. A GA position is a privilege to obtain and maintain. Scholarships and fellowships are not renewable.
For current GAs, please be aware that the GA position you currently hold expires at the end of this academic year. If you are interested in a GA position for your second year, you must follow the process outlined below. As a current GA, you have the benefit of past performance, but no guarantee of placement.
Students interested in obtaining full graduate assistantship positions should apply outside of the Smith School. No position within the parameters of the MPO will be for more than half-time (typically, 10-12 hours per week to fulfill 180 hours each semester). Administrative offices that have hired graduate assistants in the past include Graduate School, Academic Data Services, Resident Life, Dining Services, Personnel Services, Institutional Advancement, University Career Center, Summer Program and Continuing Education, Human Relations Office, Records and Registration, Stamp Student Union and Undergraduate Admissions. Most positions outside the Business School are posted through the UMCP Personnel vacancy list which is posted in Smith Operations (VMH 2410) and in the Chesapeake Building. In the past MBA students have been very successful at obtaining positions outside the Smith School.
